In Iraq, armed robbers have killed 14 people in a mass raid on jewellery shops in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad. Interior ministry officials said about 10 gunmen rampaged through a busy street lined with gold shops in the Bayaa district in the south-west of the city and left bombs in the shops they had robbed. They said most of the victims were goldsmiths and shop owners. According to an eyewitness, he heard a huge explosion and then saw dead bodies on the ground close to the gold shops. Meanwhile an interior ministry officials said a number of other bombs left on the usually heavily guarded street had been defused.
