Armed Forces join rescue work in flood ravaged AP, Karanataka

As Army, Navy and Air Force personnel are working on war-footing to rescue people in the rain battered Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, the death toll in the affected areas has risen to 134. 12 more casualties were reported in Karnataka today. Bijapur district was the worst hit with 27 people perishing in the torrential rains and floods followed by Raichur with 12 casualties. Koppal, Gulbarga and Bagalkote bore the brunt of heavy rains for the past five days. Hundreds of houses have been submerged and around 30,000 houses collapsed in pounding rains. Rivers in the region are in still spate with flash floods throwing normal life out of gear. Road and rail services have been severely hit. More than 200 villages have been marooned and hundreds of cattle killed. Chief Minister B. S. Yeddyurappa toured the flood affected districts today. Rescue operations are in full swing at Kadawada village in Uttara Kannada district where a major landslide has buried eight houses.AIR Bangaluru Correspondent Sudhindra reports that National Disaster Rescue Mission personnel have reached Hubli from Pune with 40 boats to take up rescue mission in the flood affected districts in north Karnataka. In Raichur and Bellary the water is receding but overcast sky poses threat of fresh rains. The people stranded on roof tops are rescued with the help of boats. Several people are still stranded in train, buses and other modes of transport as several bridges and roads are under water.In neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, 16 people were killed and over 4.5 lakh people evacuated from the floods inundated areas. Of them, 1.5 lakh people were evacuated in Kurnool district. The state government has stepped up relief and rescue efforts with the help of 550 army personnel. About 105 relief camps have been set up in the affected areas.AIR Hyderabad correspondent M.S.Lakshmi reports that the situation is still grim in Kurnool, Mahaboobnagar and Krishna districts. Several villages on the banks of Krishna in Guntur and Nalgonda districts are also facing threat as heavy inflows are coming into reservoirs. Relief material including food and drinking water is being airdropped in the flood-hit areas. State Chief Minister K Rosaiah said that the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has assured him on phone that all help from the Centre will be provided to cope with the situation.Defence Ministry spokesman said Armed forces have intensified rescue operations using 13 helicopters and over 100 boats in flood-hit states of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. IAF has deployed 13 helicopters, including five Mi-8s and eight Chetaks, in the two southern states and already carried out 17 sorties.In Goa, large parts of the state are lashed with heavy rains for the third day today with people remaining trapped in their houses. Heavy rains also continued to lash several parts of Maharashtra's coastal Ratnagiri district.Met office says the southwest monsoon is vigorous in east Madhya Pradesh, Konkan, Goa, coastal Karnataka and Kerala and active in Orissa, central Maharashtra and coastal Andhra Pradesh.
