Arab League calls urgent meeting on Syria peace plan

The Arab League has called an emergency meeting in Cairo on Saturday to discuss the status of the implementation of the peace plan in Syria.

The Arab League's Deputy Secretary General, Ahmed bin Heli, said the meeting will look into the first report by the Chief of the Observer’s Mission.

The mission began its work on December 27.

According to reports, the meeting is likely to discuss whether to withdraw the Arab Observers from Syria in the wake of reports of the violation of the peace plan.

Opposition activists have been critical of the mission, saying it is giving time to the ruling regime a cover for its crackdown on protesters. Around 100 Arab League Observers are in Syria to monitor the regime's compliance with the League plan to end the violence in the country.

In another development, an explosion struck a gas pipeline near the town Rastan in the strife torn Homs province in central Syria. There were no casualties. The pipeline feeds two power stations. The Government blamed terrorists for the blast.
