The Arab League has endorsed the resumption of indirect peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians, raising hopes for the revival of the stalled Middle East peace talks. The Arab League support follows an announcement by US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, that the indirect talks, also known as proximity talks, will resume within several days. US Middle East envoy George Mitchel is scheduled to return to the region in the coming week. The Israel Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu has welcomed progress towards talks but said he awaits a Palestinian response. Palestinian officials say its leadership will respond in a few days. The rival Hamas which controls Gaza has already condemned any resumption of talks with Israel.
