Apex court upholds Army's policy of preferential promotion to officers in combat units

Indian Army's policy of preferential promotion to those in combat units was upheld by the Supreme Court today. The apex court, however, asked the Centre to create and fill up the 141 additional posts which were created to compensate other corporations of the Army. The 2009 Army policy allows promotion as Colonels to combat units and not to those in engineering, signals and artillery units. <br/><br/>Infantry, mechanised infantry and the armoured corps are part of army's combat units. The policy was struck down by the Armed Forces Tribunal and the Centre had appealed in the Supreme Court.
