AP launching smart cards scheme based on ‘Aadhaar’

Andhra Pradesh Government is launching smart cards scheme based on Unique Identity Number-Aadhaar today. Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy will be launching the Smart Card Scheme at Maheswaram mandal of Ranga Reddy district this morning. Maheswaram would be the first Mandal in the country which would use Aadhaar based biometric authentication with Smart Card for issuance of commodities under Public Distribution System. Civil Supplies Minister D Sridhar Babu said the encrypted data of Aadhaar numbers of the family and their entitlement in the Smart Card would weed out bogus ration cards, prevent dealer frauds and diversion of commodities to non eligible. Stating that 6 lakh families have been issued smart cards so far in seven districts of the state, he said -any where ration- would be implemented for nomads and migrant laburours once the project completed in these 7 districts. He also said issuance of Smart Cards would be started in rest of 16 districts soon.
