Andhra Pradesh Government has been contemplating to bring an Act to benefit tenant farmers in the state. A Bill may be introduced in the next Assembly session to make all the tenant farmers eligible to get crop loans, insurance and subsidies from the next Kharif season. Revenue Minister Raghuveera Reddy told reporters in Hyderabad that a State level public debate on the issue would be held with all stakeholders including farmers, tenants, local political leaders and different farmers’ associations during last week of this month. Over 10 political parties have endorsed introduction of Bill in Assembly to protect the tenancy rights without harming ownership rights of the landlords, he said. The Minister said, the banks had distributed loans to only 1.5 lakh tenant farmers during the year even after forming themselves into joint liability groups while lakhs of tenant farmers remained uncovered.
