Andhra Pradesh Governor E. S. L. Narsimhan has called upon the members of legislature to help maintaining peace and tranquillity in the state. In his maiden speech at the Joint sitting of the members of both Legislative Assembly and the Legislative Council on commencement of the Budget Session, Governor said the members have every responsibility to ensure peace and tranquillity in the state. Stating that the public order and pace of development have been affected in the past few months due to difficult times that the state was undergoing, he appealed all members to ensure protection to the life and property of people. The customary address which went on for more than an hour has revealed the Government’s priorities. Expressing satisfaction over the 7.5% estimated growth rate during the present fiscal, he said the state has been recovering fast from the impact of global recession and the Government was committed to keep up the momentum at any cost. Asserting that the Government was committed to provide 4% reservations for Muslims, he said all legal measures have been initiated to ensure the same. Stating that 100% literacy would be achieved in the state in next 10 years, Governor has said that all the welfare programmes which are being implemented now, would be continued for women, SC,ST,BC, Minorities. Members from Telangana region across party lines have repeatedly raised pro-Telangana slogan during Governor’s customary speech and countered by those from pro-Unified State. Congress MLAs from Telangana region at one point of time walked out even as the Governor's speech was continuing . Later they have held a demonstration before the Gandhi statue in the Assembly premises in favour of Statehood for Telangana.
