In Andhra Pradesh, the state Cabinet Chaired by Chief Minister K Rosaiah has met specially to discuss measures to rein in Micro Finance Institutions, MFI, in Hyderabad today. Earlier speaking through video conference to Collectors and Superintendents of Police of the Districts, the Chief Minister has said an Ordinance is being considered to be promulgated to contain harassment activities for repayment by the Micro Finance Institutions in the state. Stating that several people, mostly the Self Help Groups have committed suicide due to harassment by MFIs, the Chief Minister has directed the district authorities to take stringent steps to prevent harassment. He further directed them to step up credit distribution through Banks and also credit-swapping at a lesser interest rate.
