Any irregularity in implementing 2G spectrum policy must be corrected;responsibility to be fixed: Govt

The Centre today maintained that if there was any irregularity or illegality in implementing policy of 2G spectrum, it must be corrected and those responsible be held to account.

Addressing a joint press conference with Telecom minister Kapil Sibal and Law minister salman Khurshid in New Delhi today, the Finance minister P Chidambaram said that all constitutional authorities will bear SC judgement in mind while discharging their constitutional duties.

The Finance Minister said that the government has accepted the judgement that 122 licences will be cancelled and spectrum released from them will be auctioned.

Law minister Salman Khurshid said that the government of the day will take the decision on policy and it can not be challanged. Mr Khurshid however said the manner of its implementation and execution can be questioned.

Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal quoting from Supreme Court judgement said that auction of natural resources is not a constitutional mandate but an economic choice of the government .

He added that the Apex Court also said that it is a prerogative of the government to decide its policy so that FDI can be attracted.
