Bangladesh on Wednesday indicated that ULFA Leader Anup Chetia will be handed over to India after the completion of the legal process. Responding to a reporter’s question on the issue during a press conference in Dhaka, Bangladesh Home Minister Sahara Khatun said that Anup Chetia is currently in jail and he would be returned through legal process. India had once again requested Bangladesh to hand over Anup Chetia during the Home Minister level talks held last week. Anup Chetia who is the general secretary of the United Liberation Front of Assam was arrested in Dhaka in December, 1997 under the Foreigners Act and Passports Act for illegally entering Bangladesh. In addition to this he also faced trial for illegally carrying foreign currencies and a satellite phone following which he served a prison term in Bangladesh. India has made repeated requests for the handing over of Anup Chetia but the absence any extradition treaty between the two countries had been a stumbling block.
