Defence Minister A.K. Antony informed the Lok Sabha today that the government has taken cognizance of the growing naval presence of China in and around the Indian Ocean Region. He said the government is aware of Chinese participation in projects like port development and deep sea mining in the Indian Ocean Region. New Delhi is keeping a constant watch on all developments concerning national security and commercial interests. Necessary measures are taken to safeguard them in accordance with the prevailing security situation and strategic considerations. Mr. Antony said a majority of the world's oil and gas trade originates in the Gulf and West Africa and transits through the Indian Ocean. The maritime traffic, uses the Sea Lines of Communication governed by the United Nations Convention for the Laws of the Seas and International Maritime Law. This is meant to ensure discipline and safe passage across the Seas, the Defence Minister said.
