The Defence Minister Mr. A.K Antony has reached Vietnam to attend the first ASEAN Defence Ministers Meeting that begins tomorrow in Hanoi.AIR correspondent reports that Mr. Antony's visit to Vietnam assumes significance in the backdrop of the fact that Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh is visiting that country later this month where regional issues are likely to get priority.It may be recalled that during the Fourth Defence Minister's meet held in last May, they agreed to establish an ADMM-Plus forum comprising the 10 ASEAN countries and 8 non-ASEAN countries namely, Australia, China, India, Japan, New Zealand. Republic of Korea, Russia and the United States. The new body seeks to address the regional peace and security challenges in the region.In a related development the US has called for an international approach to resolve territorial disputes in the Pacific region. The US Defence Secretary Robert Gates today said that bilateral relationships is not enough to confront the most important security challenges in the region. He called for intervention by the multilateral institutions for the same despite China's opposition to it. Gates, who is in Hanoi for the ASEAN-led conference. Malaysian Defence Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi told reporters in Hanoi that the South China Sea was a a little bit sensitive and would not be on the formal agenda when regional defence ministers meet tomorrow.
