Defence Minister AK Antony has called for adopting innovative measures to attract the youth to join the Territorial Army. Addressing the 63rd Territorial Army Day review parade in New Delhi today, Mr Antony said Territorial Army has a great responsibility in augmenting the regular army during war and natural calamities. The defence minister hailed the Territorial Army for actively participating in counter-insurgency in Jammu and Kashmir and the Northeast. He said, in recognition of its role to deal with ecological degradation and global warming, Territorial Army has gained entry into the Guinness Book of World Records by planting maximium trees in a day. Mr Antony said the Ecological Task Forces have also done commendable work in the field of afforestration and ecological restoration. On the occasion, the defence minister also gave the awards to seven officers and jawans for their outstanding role in Territorial Army. He expressed satisfaction that prominent personalities, including former cricketer Kapil Dev and Union minister Sachin Pilot, have come forward to join the force and don the uniform for the national cause. Earlier, a majestic parade was held with martial tunes, smartly turned contingents and a large crowd adding fervour and enthusiasm to the function. The parade was attended by Minister of State for Defence MM Pallam Raju, Army Chief General Bikram Singh, Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal N A K Browne and other civil and military dignitaries, military and defence attaches from foreign countries.
