Stepping up their protest against the atomic power plant in Kudankulam, anti-nuclear activists today stood in sea waters forming a human chain off nearby Indinthakarai coast.The activists of People's Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMANE) stood in the waters close to the shores in a new turn to their year-long protests.Police, whose presence has been strengthened in and around the sea shores with additional forces, have beefed up security along the coast to prevent any untoward incident
during the day-long protest. The agitators have put forward four demands – stoppage of the process of fuel loading in Kudankulam Nuclear Power
Project, drop the plan to arrest anti-nuclear movement leaders, adequate compensation for those who suffered losses and release of those already taken into custody. Police are still on the look out for People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy convener Udayakumar and Pushparayan on the charges of instigating violence. Koodankulam Nuclear power plant Site director R S Sundar told AIR Tiruchirapalli Correspondent that the loading of the enriched uranium will start as soon as the report is given by Atomic Energy Regulatory Board Experts. AERB had given clearance for initial fuel loading and first approach to criticality in its board meeting held last August 9. The AERB officials will ensure all safety measures are in place and will verify the compliance of AERB procedures.
