Anti-nuclear activists begin Jal Satyagraha against Koodankulam plant

In Idinthakarai, Tamil Nadu protesters today stood in sea water in protest against the decision to load enriched uranium into the nuclear reactor of Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant.

The protesters have resorted to standing in sea water to protest against loading of fuel in the nuclear reactor of Koodankulam nuclear power plant. In an exclusive interview, People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy convener Udayakumar told AIR that they will continue with the sea water protest.

He said the Supreme Court accepting the case itself is a victory for the movement and is not worried that the Court had refused to stay the loading of fuel. Tirunelveli Superintendent of Police Vijayendra Bidari said that the situation is calm and peaceful. He said that a summons has been served on Udayakumar by Valliyoor Judicial magistrate for protests and unlawful assembly last year.

With Atomic energy Regulatory Board giving the go ahead and Supreme Court refusing to stay loading of enriched fuel, it is to be seen how long the protesters can sustain their movement.
