Anti- government protester surrounded army barracks

In Thailand, anti-government protesters have gathered outside an army barracks where the Prime Minister, Abhisit Vejjajiva, has been holed up. He has appeared on national TV to say he could not grant their midday deadline to resign and call elections. The protest, led by supporters of ousted ex-PM Thaksin Shinawatra, is one of the largest in recent years and has been peaceful so far. Some 50,000 soldiers and police have been deployed in Bangkok.
