In Thailand, the leaders of the violent anti-government protests in the capital Bangkok have said that they have surrendered. They apologised to the crowd of demonstrators, but said they wanted to avoid further loss of life. They said they don't want anyone else to die. TV footage showed that the leaders were taken into custody and whisked away by the police. Reports say that the groups of protestors are angry at the way the protest has ended and they have already started to break-up into smaller groups.
Meanwhile, plumes of black smoke and loud explosions continue to rise above the Bangkok skyline as troops battle to quell the protests in other parts of the city.
Earlier, five people were killed and 18 others injured in clashes between troops and anti-government protests. One Italian journalist was also killed in the clashes. The troops had moved against the demonstrators with gunfire, tear gas and water cannon in an operation, which the government had said will continue throughout the day.
