Anti-corruption police arrest Nigeria's powerful politicians Bankole

One of Nigeria's most powerful politicians has been arrested by anti-corruption police. Outgoing House of Representatives speaker Dimeji Bankole was held over allegations that he misappropriated tens of millions of dollars of government funds. He was held after a four-hour stand-off at his home in the capital, Abuja. A spokesman for Nigeria's anti-corruption body said they have received information that Mr Bankole was planning to flee the country. Along with all other lawmakers, Mr Bankole's term of office expired on Friday and a new parliament is due to be sworn in on Monday. President Goodluck Jonathan was sworn into office a week ago promising to tackle Nigeria's endemic corruption.
