Anthrax outbreak in Bangladesh hits 327

In Bangladesh, the number of Anthrax infected people has crossed three hundred even as the government issued a red alert against the disease outbreak on Sunday. Nineteen new cases have been reported in Meherpur and Chuadanga on Monday taking the number of anthrax infected people to 327 in last 15 days. The Bangladesh government issued the red alert following reports of the disease spreading to six districts nearly two weeks after the first case was detected in a village in Siraj Ganj District. Bangladesh Fisheries and Livestock Minister Abdul Latif Biswas told reporters in Dhaka on Sunday that the red alert has been issued by his ministry and all concerned officials of the livestock department and civil surgeons of the health department have been asked to remain on high alert to prevent and treat any anthrax related infections. The minister also said that the government has already dispatched adequate quantity of vaccines for inoculation of livestock in the affected areas and medical teams have been sent to the villages for treating the infected people. The government has also set up check posts to prevent movement of infected cattle while doctors of City Corporations have also been instructed to examine the cattle at slaughter houses. The government has also set up a control room to continuously monitor the anthrax situation.
