Ansari beats Jaswant to serve 2nd Vice-Prez term

UPA nominee Mohammad Hamid Ansari has been re-elected as the Vice President of India. Ansari got 490 votes against 238 secured by his NDA-backed opponent Jaswant Singh.

Ansari, whose term ends on Friday, has been elected to serve for the second consecutive term as the 14th Vice-President. Ansari's candidature was also supported by some Left parties and UPA allies like the SP and BSP.

Briefing the media, Returning officer for Vice-Presidential polls and Lok Sabha Secretary-General TK Vishwanathan said out of the 787 strong electoral college, 736 had cast their votes while eight votes were invalid. He said the magic figure for winning the election was 365.

Voting for vice-presidential polls was held today at Parliamnet.
