Another 41 Columns of Army pressed in ongoing rescue operation in Leh

In calamity hit Leh and adjoining areas, another 41 Columns of the Indian Army were pressed today in the ongoing relief and rescue operations.In addition, army troops are assisting Border Roads Organisation in creating diversions at several damaged bridge sites on NH-1D. Two bridges have also been launched at Phyang and Choglamsar. Defence sources told AIR correspondent that communication requirements of the District Administration will be augmented further with the arrival of 7 tons of additional cables. The Army is also making provisions to fulfil the requirements of large tents for establishment of Field Hospital, tents for displaced persons, firewood for cremation of dead bodies and provisioning of generator sets as projected by the District Administration.Meanwhile, 5000 blankets have been provided by the Army. Providing succor and medicare, 91 civilians have been admitted in Army Hospital, 810 civilians given trauma care and 423 casualties treated at Army Hospital, so far.Meanwhile, relentless rescue efforts by IAF at Leh continued for the fourth day, today. Six Cheetah helicopters of IAF undertook more than 60 sorties to evacuate 90 people from Skyu in Zanskar valley this morning. About 130 trekkers, predominantly foreigners from 12 different countries and a few Indian porters were reportedly stranded at Skyu, a location only reachable by Cheetah helicopters owing to flight through narrow constricted valley and not negotiable by the large rotor Mi-17 helicopters. Transport aircraft are taking several sorties to meet the requirements.
