Noted Social worker, Anna Hazare, on Tuesday started his hunger strike at Jantar Mantar in the national capital to protest against the reported delay in bringing a Lokpal Bill to effectively deal with corruption. Other important personalities who joined him in the fast include Kiran Bedi, Arvind Kejriwal and Swami Agniwesh. They first went to Rajghat, the Samadhi of the Father of Nation and later started their campaign from the India Gate lawns which concluded at Jantar Mantar. A large number of people participated in the rally. The Prime Minister's office appealed Hazare to abandon his hunger strike. The appeal pointed out that during the meeting of Anna Hazare and his colleagues with the Prime Minister, Law Minister and other senior officials on 7th of last month. Dr. Singh had accepted Hazare's suggestion that a sub-committee of group of ministers would interact with the prominent civil society activists and discuss the draft of the Lokpal Bill which they had given him. The sub-committee headed by Defence Minister had met Anna Hazare's colleagues but the interaction proved fruitless as the activists insisted on the government to accept their draft in full. People in Mumbai have come forward to show their support for social activist Anna Hazare’s agitation for the demand to involve civil society in formulation of the anti-graft Lokpal Bill. Pledging support for Hazare’s fast unto death campaign in Delhi, many activists also sat on fast at Azad Maidan in Mumbai. A huge rally of bikes and cars was also organised Tuesday morning. The rally started from Shivaji Park in Dadar and went till Azad Maidan in South Mumbai. Mayank Gandhi of NGO Jagrut Nagrik Manch said while many people are fasting at their homes or offices others have pledged their support via text messages and e-mails. He said in the evening activists will distribute pamphlets near the CST station to make citizens aware of the corruption menace and the need of the Lokpal Bill with people's participation.
