Anna breaks fast as notification strikes

Noted Gandhian Anna Hazare, who led the campaign to bring an effective Lokpal Bill to deal with corruption, ended his fast on the fifth day today. He ended the fast after offering water to people sitting with him on the hunger strike.After the agitating civil society activists led by Hazare had a breakthrough on Friday evening by agreeing to appoint a joint panel of 10 members to draft the legislation, Hazare said he would end his fast only after the gazette notification to this effect was issued by the government.Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee will be the Chairman of the committee that will also include Law Minister Veerappa Moily, Telecom Minister Sibal, Home Minister P Chidambaram and Water Resources Minister Salman Khurshid as members. Noted Lawyer Shanti Bhushan will be its co- Chairman.Besides Anna Hazare, those representing the civil society in the joint committee will be eminent lawyer Prashant Bhushan, retired Supreme Court Judge Santosh Hegde and RTI activist Arvind Kejriwal.The notification was issued this morning.Addressing a large number of people gathered at Jantar Mantar in the national capital, he asserted that the fight against the corruption would continue and this was only a beginning. He said this was a victory for the entire nationReacting to the development, Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh said that the joining of hands of civil society and the Government on the Lokpal Bill issue was a step that augurs well for democracy. Dr. Singh said the Centre intends to introduce the historic legislation in the Monsoon Session of Parliament.Describing corruption a scourge that confronts the nation, the Prime Minister said the interaction between the Centre and the representatives of Anna Hazare was productive. He hoped that process to prepare this legislation would move forward in a constructive mode so that after consulting wide spectrum of stake holders, the Bill was placed before the Cabinet for introduction during the Monsoon Session. Meanwhile, BJP General Secretary Ravi shankar Prasad has called an all-party meet to discuss the issue.
