Anna Hazare today began his day-long token fast at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi to protest against the Parliamentary Standing Committee's recommendations on the Lokpal Bill. Hazare visited Mahatma Gandhi's memorial at Rajghat before beginning his fast.
Leaders from major political parties are also expected to participate in an open debate on the proposed Lokpal Bill during the course of the day. Congress General Secretary Janardhan Dwivedi however denied his party's participation saying that a debate at this stage outside Parliament may be premature. Dwivedi also accused Team Anna of putting unnecessary pressure on Parliament.
The Prime Minister has called an All Party meet on Wednesday to discuss the Lokpal issue. Official sources said that the cabinet will discuss the issue on Tuesday. Later, the same day, the government will hold consultations with the UPA allies.
