In Germany, Chancellor Angela Markel's governing Christian Democrats have suffered a heavy defeat in a regional election in the city of Hamburg. Preliminary results gave her party 20 per cent of the vote compared with 50 per cent for the opposition Social Democrats. The results would mean the Christian Democrats losing three more seats in the upper house of the German Parliament, making it more difficult for them to pass legislation.
