Angela Merkel warns Turkey that Berlin could re-examine its policies

German Chancellor Angela Merkel today warned Turkey that Berlin could re-examine its policies after the arrest of two more citizens in Turkey for political reasons.<br/>'<br/>The latest arrests bring the total number of German political prisoners in Turkish custody to 12 at a time when<br/>ties between the two countries have badly frayed.<br/><br/>According to remarks carried by Germany's DPA news agency, Merkel said there is "no legal basis" for detention in most of these cases. Of the 55 Germans currently detained in Turkey, 12 of them including four with dual German-Turkish citizenship are being held for political reasons, the foreign ministry said.<br/><br/>Relations between the two NATO allies have deteriorated sharply after Berlin sharply criticised Ankara over the<br/>crackdown that followed last year's failed coup attempt.
