‘Andhra police stops Bus Yatra; Takes 16 leaders of Telangana JAC into custody

In Andhra Pradesh, police on Sunday foiled the Bus Yatra taken out by the Telangana Joint Action Committee from Hyderabad to Kothagudem Coal fields. Extending solidarity to the Coal Workers who are on strike for statehood for Telangana, the Telangana JAC had taken out a Bus yatra Sunday afternoon to Singareni Coal Fields. The police stopped the yatra at Pembarthi in Warangal District and took 16 leaders including its Chairman Prof Kodandaram into custody under section 151 of Criminal Procedure Code. However, Prof Kodandaram and five others were later released on personal surety.Meanwhile, several political parties condemned the arrest of the JAC leaders. Congress leaders from Telangana region condemned the arrests while Telangana Rastra Samithi President K Chandrasekhara Rao termed the arrests undemocratic. Pro-Telangana agitators held rasta roko and protest demonstrations at many places against arrests of JAC leaders.Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy reviewed the situation in the wake of General Strike with ministers in Hyderabad Sunday evening.The Employees’ Unions of the State owned Road Transport Corporation have however decided to continue the ongoing stir.
