Andhra orders inquiry into infant deaths

The Andhra Pradesh Government has ordered an enquiry into infant deaths at the Government General Hospital in Kurnool. Expressing serious concern over death of 10 infants in last three days, Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy directed the officials to conduct a detailed inquiry into the incident and initiate stern action against hospital staff if they are found negligent in treating the infants. However, a preliminary report submitted by the team of doctors ruled out any prima facie negligence on the part of doctors or the hospital staff in the infants’ death. The report stated that only one infant was born in Kurnool Government Hospital and the other infants born elsewhere and were admitted to the hospital after their condition deteriorated.
