Andhra likely to urge centre to protect interests of lower riparian states in utilising river waters

Andhra Pradesh state Government is likely to urge the centre to evolve a formula to protect the interests of the lower riparian states in utilising river waters. Chief Minister K Rosaiah has arrived in Delhi ahead of the crucial meeting convened by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh with him and Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan this evening on the contentious Babli project. Speaking to reporters, Mr Rosaiah has emphasised the need to evolve a formula to protect the interests of lower riparian states especially when the orders issued by Tribunals and even by courts are being violated. The Prime Minister has convened the Chief Ministers’ meeting following an all party delegation from Andhra Pradesh seeking his intervention to prevent Maharastra Government from constructing Babli project. Andhra Pradesh is likely to focus on the alleged illegal projects and diversion of water by Maharastra during the meeting. Andhra Pradesh has been arguing that the construction of Babli project was illegal and it will lead to parching of about 20,000 acres under Sriram Sagar Project on its side. Maharstra has also been alleged that it is diverting and utilising undue share of water. A hearing is due in the Supreme Court later during this month. It may be recalled that a 70-member delegation from the main opposition party in Andhra Pradesh, Telugu Desam Party trained in vain to visit Babli project recently and has been kept in custody by Maharastra police for about a week.
