Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister K Rosaiah has reiterated that the state Government is committed to protect state interests in getting due share of river waters and taking all measures to prevent illegal projects by upper riparian states including Maharastra. Addressing a press conference in Hyderabad today he emphasised the need to find a reasonable solution to protect the interests of lower riparian states. He further said the Central Government’s intervention would be sought once again to control the upper riparian states when an all party delegation meets Prime Minister on 26th of this month. On Telugu Desam Party stir in Maharastra against Babli project, he said TDP could have launched agitation long ago as various central approvals for Babli project were given since 1983. Rejecting TDP’s criticism that the Central and state Governments remained as silent spectators when the Maharastra police were ill-treating TDP leaders, Chief Minister said he has been constantly talking to his Maharastra Counterpart Ashok Chavan. Condemning the ill-treatment shown by Maharastra Police towards public representatives from a neighbouring state, he also said it would be irresponsible on part of TDP to talk in a way which might ignite differences between Telugu people and Marathas. On the other hand, TDP president Chandrababu Naidu has said the agitation would continue against Babli project. At a protest demonstration in front of the Mahatma Gandhi’s statue in the premises of Legislature Assembly in Hyderabad this morning, Naidu said the TDP delegation has tried to visit Babli project site only to verify latest position before meeting Prime Minister in an all party delegation that would seek his intervention to stop Babli and 13 other illegal projects by Maharastra. He alleged that the Central and the State Governments have been silent spectators when the Maharastra Government was ill-treating TDP leaders. Stating that the north Telangana region in Andhra Pradesh would become a desert due to illegal construction of Babli project, he held centre responsible for not controlling Maharstra over illegal projects across Godavari despite repeated protests by TDP for the past 6 years. He also alleged that the State Government has done nothing to protect the state interests.
