Anderson sent out of Bhopal due to law, order situation: Pranab?

The Finance Minister Mr. Pranab Mukherjee today said that then Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Arjun Singh had decided to send former Union Carbide Corporation CEO Warren Anderson out of Bhopal in view of the deteriorating law and order situation after the gas tragedy in 1984. <br/><br/>Speaking to reporters in Kolkatta Mr. Mukherjee quoted Arjun Singh's statement on Dec 8, 1984, five days after the gas leak which left 25,000 people dead. On the question of extraditing Anderson, he said that centre will explore the possibility of extradition. He refused to comment on the verdict delivered by the Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court in Bhopal June 7, but said the government will go to a higher judiciary.<br/><br/>Former Union Minister Arun Nehru, a close aide of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, also claimed Arjun Singh as Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister had taken the decision to release then Union Carbide CEO Warren Anderson after the Bhopal tragedy. He said, Rajiv Gandhi had no role in it. <br/><br/>Mr.Nehru said, the only authentic version of the episode could be got from the press interviews of Arjun Singh in 1984 and to attribute any motive to Rajiv Gandhi is wrong as the decision was taken by the then Cheif Minister. <br/><br/>Yesterday Senior Congress leader, Satyavrat Chaturvedi urged Arjun Singh to speak out on the controversy. Two other senior congress leaders Digvijay Singh and R K Dhawan have said that Mr. Arjun Singh is aware who took the decision which was taken at the state level.<br/><br/>Union Law Minister Veerappa Moily said, the government had done its best in the case and the delay was on the part of judiciary which diluted it. Mr. Moily said, the case against Anderson is not yet closed.<br/><br/>Opposition has been pressing the ruling congress with a barrage of questions on who had ordered Anderson's extradition hours after his arrest in the aftermath of the tragedy. Senior BJP Leader and Chief Minister of Gujarat Narendra Modi urged the congress chief to break her silence and tell people who is responsible for the escape of former union carbide chief.He was addressing the BJP national executive meet in Patna.
