Anand qualifies to play against Carlsen

Five-times world champion Viswanathan Anand has won the Candidates Chess tournament with one round to spare. In the event being held at Khanty Mansiysk in Russia, Anand settled for a draw with Sergey Karjakin of Russia in the 13th and penultimate round. The draw helped Anand reach eight points.The other results in the 13th round also helped to seal the fate in Anand's favour irrespective of the results tomorrow in the final round. Sergey Karjakin, Vladimir Kramnik, Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, Dmitry Andreikin and top seed Levon Aronian are on Six and a Half points each. Peter Svidler stands seventh on six points while Topalov remained on Five and Half points to fill the last place.The biggest upset came when top seed Levon Aronian of Armenia lost to lowest ranked Dmitry Andreikin of Russia.The tournament victory gives Anand the right to a match against Magnus Carlsen of Norway who dethroned the Indian champion at Chennai in November last. The rematch will take place sometime in the last quarter of this year. The victory will also fetch Anand the winner's cheque of 135,000 Euros, which amounts to a little over one crore rupees. In the last round, Anand meets Peter Svidler of Russia. The result of this round will be of academic interest only.
