Parliament gave its seal of approval to the Anand Marriage(Amendment) Bill, 2012 with the Lok Sabha adopting it. The Rajya Sabha had passed it earlier.

The bill provides for the separate registration of Sikh marriages. This meets a demand of the Sikh community that so far had been getting its marriages registered under the Hindu Marriage Act 1955.

Replying to the debate on the Bill, Law minister Salman Khurshid termed it as a progressive step.
