Amitabh Bachchan rejects links with Panama Papers firms

Actor Amitabh Bachchan today rejected suggestions of him having any links with offshore companies listed in the Panama Papers. Mr Bachchan said in a statement that he does not know any of the companies referred to by a leading national daily newspaper, which include Sea Bulk Shipping Company Ltd, Lady Shipping Ltd, Treasure Shipping Ltd, and Tramp Shipping Ltd. He stated that he has never been a director of any of the above stated companies and it is possible that his name has been misused.

Mr Bachhan said, he has paid all his taxes including on monies spent by him overseas. He said, monies that he has remitted overseas have been in compliance with law, including remittances through LRS, after paying Indian taxes. He also said that in any event the news report does not even suggest any illegality on his part.

The Panama Papers are a leaked set of 11.5 million confidential documents created by the Panamanian corporate service provider Mossack Fonseca that provide detailed information on more than 214,000 offshore companies, including the identities of shareholders and directors.

The name of Bachchan's daughter-in-law and actor Aishwarya Rai was included in the list. However, her media advisor yesterday refuted any involvement from her side and said that all information provided is false and all charges are untrue.
