Gujarat Minister of State for Home Amit Shah has resigned facing murder charges but remained untraceable for the CBI. Shah's resignation comes a day after CBI slapped charges of murder and kidnapping against him in the fake encounter killing of alleged gangster Sohrabuddin Sheikh and his wife Kauser Bi in 2005.Confirming his resignation, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, said in New Delhi he has information that Amit Shah's resignation has reached his residence in Gandhinagar. He said, on his return, he will accept it and complete the formalities. Modi, however, contended that Shah was innocent and the charges against him were politically motivated.Rebutting BJP's angry reaction to the CBI's pursuit against Amit Shah, Home Minster Chidambaram said CBI had filed the case against Shah as per the direction of Supreme Court. He said lawyer Arun Jaitley should have taken note of it, when Supreme Court handed over the matter to CBI In January.The resignation of Shah, considered a very close associate of Modi, did not not, impress the Congress which said it was too little, too late. Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said the BJP leadership and Narendra Modi are fully supporting and justifying the actions till now with no sign of remorse. Meanwhile, CBI continued its search for Shah, who along with two other accused Yashpal Chudasama and Ajay Patel, have gone underground. CBI officials said teams from the Central agency are searching for the accused in various locations. Shah's anticipatory bail application before the CBI court yesterday was rejected and his lawyers were planning to approach the Gujarat High Court. The chargesheet has named Shah as a key accused along with IPS officers D G Vanzara, Rajkumar Pandian, M N Dinesh and Abhay Chudasama. In all, 15 accused have been named.According to the charge sheet, it was Shah who had entrusted the task of eliminating Sheikh, an alleged gangster. Sheikh was killed in an encounter on November 26, 2005. The CBI is conducting a fresh probe into the encounter on the directions of the Supreme Court.
