'Amit Shah re-elected as BJP President for new term

BJP President Amit Shah was today elected unopposed as its chief for a second term. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and party top brass including a number of Union Ministers and party ruled state Chief Ministers proposed his name during the nomination process. There was no other leader in the fray for the top post. Party election in-charge Avinash Rai Khanna announced Mr. Shah's unanimous election.<br/><br/>Currently, he was completing the remaining tenure of Rajnath Singh, who had demitted the post after joining the Union cabinet in May 2014. Mr. Shah's new term will be his first full-term lasting three years.<br/><br/>Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated him on his re-election as BJP president and voiced confidence that the party will scale newer heights under his leadership.<br/><br/>In a tweet, Mr. Modi said Shah combines grassroot-level work and rich organisational experience which will benefit the Party immensely. Other top BJP leaders and Union Ministers also praised Amit Shah after his re-election.<br/><br/>In his 18-month first term, the BJP became the world's largest political party as its membership grew to more than 11 crore. The party came to power in Maharashtra, Haryana, Jharkhand and Jammu and Kashmir. However, it suffered defeats in Delhi and Bihar assembly elections.<br/><br/>In the new term, assembly elections in five states including Assam, West Bengal and Kerala later this year will be a challenge for new BJP chief as party has no significant presence there. Next year, assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh will also be a tough task for him. <br/><br/>Amit Shah has expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, party leaders and workers for reposing confidence in him. In a Facebook post, Mr. Shah said he will try to fulfill their expectations by hard work. He said he will lead the BJP to new heights with the guidance and support of party leaders and workers.
