Amid tight security, Rosaiah to present Andhra Budget

Amidst unprecedented security arrangements, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister K. Rosaiah is all set to present the state’s Annual Budget for the year 2010-11 around noon time today. Bracing up to foil any attempt by the students Joint Action Committee to lay siege of the Assembly coinciding with the Budget presentation, the police have made elaborate security arrangements in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad. Large contingents of para-military forces have been deployed around the Assembly building and almost all the thoroughfares near the Assembly have been closed to general public.

Suspecting that the agitators might target properties and vehicles of the people on the roads leading to the Assembly, Police Commissioner A.K. Khan has said even pedestrians would not be allowed towards the Assembly except those on official duty. Nine-feet-high barricades with specially-designed meshes have been put up at vantage points and police have identified 120 places in the twin cities where security has been tightened.

The Congress and the all-party Telangana Joint Action Committee (JAC) have formally snapped ties with both of them declaring separately that they have parted ways in the struggle for statehood to Telangana. The Congress MLAs belonging to Telangana region have announced their decision as the JAC’s condition of asking MLAs to resign was not acceptable to them. JAC Convener Prof. Kodanadaram said the JAC was also not keen on its ties with the Congress and would take a final view about TDP, which has maintained a low profile in the last few days. The TDP had taken the stand that its MLAs would resign only after their counterparts from the Congress quit.

After a meeting of the Telangana Congress leaders, former Home Minister Jana Reddy said they have passed a resolution seeking suspension of Vijayawada MP Lagadapati Rajagopal for his association with the Samaikyandhra JAC

The Congress has urged the students to call off their today's programme while the TDP urged them to conduct it peacefully.

Meanwhile, tension prevailed in Hyderabad as hundreds of students tried to reach the Assembly responding to a call given by the Student Joint Action Committe to seize the House. Amidst tight security arrangements, police prevented student rallies at several places in the city. Scores of students including their leaders have been taken into custody. At the Osmania Univerisity Campus, hundreds of students took out a rally and broke the barricade towards the Assembly. However, the police prevented the students to reach the Assembly.

The Assembly was adjourned for a brief period this morning as the Opposition Telugu Desam Party members stalled the proceedings over the crisis faced by the handloom sector.
