Union Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani has accused Gandhi family that a trust run by them fraudulently purchased about 65 acre land in Amethi meant for a Bicycle factory. Addressing a rally in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh, Mrs Irani took on Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi yesterday on his home turf. She claimed that 65 acres of farmers' land, acquired at subsidised rate for setting up the Bicycle factory, was sold to Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust in February, this year. She said the land was acquired and given to the bicycle company with claims that the project would generate employment in this area. Mrs Irani said that the land should now go back to the Uttar Pradesh State Industrial Development Corporation as the factory had not been set up.

However, the Congress has dismissed her charges as wild and baseless. Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said that he doesn't understand the connection between the closure of bicycles and the purchasing and auction under court orders. He said, the Trust procured the land under court orders in an open transparent fashion.
