Amendment in Haj Act not under consideration: Govt

The government today said that the amendment to the Haj Act is not under its consideration at present. The Minister of State for External Affairs Mr. Shashi Tharoor however informed the Lok Sabha today that it has set up a panel to examine the recommendations of the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha K. Rahman on reforms for managing the system of Haj pilgrimage. He said that the exercise is aimed at gradually eliminating the subsidy provision, Empowering the Haj committee of India for handling air charter operations, regulating private tour operators and streamlining the accommodation at Makkah and Madinah in a transparent manner among other things. He said that the report of the committee is yet to be submitted. Mr. Rahman's report on the need to reform the Haj management system is on the lines of Tabung Haji of Malaysia. The report has proposed that members of the Muslim community in India should mobilise their personal savings for performing Haj with a view to gradually ending the provision of government's subsidy.<br/><br/> <br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/><br/> <br/>
