Alleged monkey thief escapes Police custody

The alleged mastermind behind the theft of eight rare Brazilian monkeys from the Alipore Zoo in August has escaped from the custody of Orissa Police while being brought to Kolkata by train. A complaint has been lodged by Orissa police that Sher Singh fled from the custody at Kharagpur while being brought to Kolkata by the Puri Express. Deputy Commissioner (Detective Department), Damayanti Sen said that the accused slipped off his handcuffs and fled. He was to be produced on December 3 at Alipore court. Sher Singh had been taken on remand by the Orissa police a month ago for involvement in the theft of a macaw. He was arrested from Ajmer by the detective department of Kolkata police on September 5 for his involvement in the theft of the monkeys of Brazilian origin.<br/>
