In Uttar Pradesh, Allahabad High Court has said that there should be a positive action on the part of the state government for keeping the river Ganga clean. The remarks were made by a Division Bench of the court comprising Justice Ashok Bhusan and Justice Arun Tandon while hearing a Public Interest Litigation seeking actions from state government to keep the river pollution free. The court has expressed strong displeasure over the fact that the state’s river conservation authority was trying to shift its burden towards National Ganga Basin Authority without trying to understand that it is the state's responsibility to make all efforts, like installing sewage treatment plants to keep the river clean and pollution free. The court directed the Advocate General to inform it about the steps including installing sewage treatment plants taken in this regard on the next date of hearing. The court comes down heavily on the state government over the issue of rising level of pollution in the river Ganga and said it was direct responsibility of the state government to check pollution level in the river.
