The Allahabad High Court has directed the Centre and the State Government to file their affidavits within two weeks on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL), seeking a ban on the manufacturing and sale of tobacco products like gutkha, pan masala and cigarettes in the state.A Division Bench of the Court comprising acting Chief Justice Amitava Lala and Justice PKS Baghel has passed the order on a PIL filed by a Deoria district-based social organisation. The Court has also asked the State Government to describe the measures so far taken by it to discourage people from consuming tobacco products.Another PIL demanding a ban on the sale of gutkha, pan masala etc. filed by UP Chapter of Indian Dental Association is pending before another Bench.
