Sri Lanka President Maithripala Sirisena has said all Sri Lankans should rise up for unity as the country is yet to fulfill the dreams of those who aspired to save their nation from the colonial powers. <br/><br/>Addressing the United National Party, UNP's 70th anniversary celebration in Colombo today, the President said the dream of United National Party founder leader and country's first Prime Minister DS Senanayake to achieve political and economic freedom through unity was yet to be fulfilled. <br/><br/>He said failure in fulfilling Senanayake's mission to safeguard Buddhism while giving freedom for other religions had resulted in a 30- year-old war. <br/><br/>The President, who hails from Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) added that its present alliance with UNP will continue in order to develop Sri Lanka. <br/><br/>The two main parties came together last year to defeat former President Mahinda Rajapakse and form a unity government. <br/><br/>Mr. Sirisena noted that majority of the 6.2 million votes he received at the last Presidential elections were from the UNP supporters and thanked them for inviting him at the party convention. <br/><br/>The new government is trying to bring peace to the country through reconciliation efforts with minority Tamil groups.
