The Government has stressed the need for bringing down the pendency of cases in the courts across the country within a time frame . Speaking at national consultations on the issue in New Delhi today, Law Minister Mr Veerppa Moily said that all the stakeholders should work for goal oriented action to expedite the justice delivery system in the country. Mr Moily said that justice delivery system is falling short of the common citizen's expectations especially the weaker sections of the society and causing a feeling of injustice and alienation among them .He said this alienation leads to conflict , violence and breakdown of civil society and therefore this has to be addressed within a time frame. He said fifty three thousand cases are pending with Supreme Court, 40 lakh with High courts and 2.7 crore cases with Lower Courts up to July 2009 and 70 percent of all prisoners in Indian Jails were under trials many of whom have served terms that are longer than the sentence for which they have been charged with.Mr Moily said that the immediate objective must be to bring down by identifying the cases within 1 year with prison visits and target another 6 month to dispose of the cases.
