The Sri Lankan opposition leader Ranil Wickremsinghe has said that an all party parliamentary delegation must visit Jaffna to assess the current situation after Traditional Industries Minister and Tamil leader Douglas Devananda told Parliament on Tuesday that ‘fear psychosis’ had gripped the people in the North due to the alarming increase in the crime rate in the area.Ranil Wickremsinghe made this statement in Parliament and informed the House that he had written to Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa requesting the latter to make arrangements for an all party parliamentary delegation to visit Jaffna to get a first hand assessment of the current situation. Wickremsinghe said that a full-day debate on the current situation in Jaffna was needed and it should be held in Parliament as soon as possible.Douglas Devananda, the Tamil Minister from Jaffna had earlier made a statement on the floor of the House saying that the security situation in Jaffna peninsula was deteriorating very fast and the issue had to be addressed without further delay.The Minister said that the Jaffna people who had seen so much agony and destruction were enjoying the peace and tranquility following the end of terrorism from the North and the East but “there is once again a fear psychosis growing among the people that there would be a return to violence.”He said the security forces and the judiciary in the area must work together to ensure that crimes were investigated and the culprits punished. “They must be brought to the book,” the Minister said. Minister Devananda added that it was important for the government sustain the confidence of the people in the area.Three killings and two abductions reported within a fortnight has shaken the Jaffna peninsula that has gone through much in the past. Last week, deputy director of education, Markandu Sivalingam was shot dead at his residence in Urumpirai by unidentified gunmen.
