In Karnataka, the all party meeting convened by Chief Minister D V Sadanand Gawda began in Bangalore today to review drought relief works. The Opposition is seeking waiver of loans to farmers hit by drought. The Chief Minister however has ruled this out and said that laons are being rescheduled and there will be no forced recovery of loans. He said drinking water and fodder are being arranged in these areas. One hundred twenty three taluks are declared drought hit. The State has sought 2,600 crore rupees from the Centre for drought relief works and an all party delegation will meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to press him to release the funds early. The official sources say, 182 crore rupees is released under the Calamity Relief Fund, of which 126 crore is contribution from the Centre and 42.6 crore from the State Government. In addition, the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department has allocated 172.46 crore rupees for drought-relief works, and the Department of Animal Husbandry and Department of Urban Development have earmarked around 15 crore rupees for the purpose.
