In Nepal, an all party meeting today decided to extend by eleven days, the term of the seven-member high level taskforce formed to iron-out differences among the major parties on contentious issues relating to the drafting of the new constitution. The representatives of 27 political parties in the constituent assembly attended the meeting held in Kathmandu. AIR Kathmandu Correspondent reports, the taskforce, formed on 11th of this month with the Maoist Chairman Prachanda as its coordinator, was to submit its report by today.Some progress has been made in the last few weeks to resolve differences among the parties on the contentious issues of the key features of the constitution. But extension of the term of the task force was necessitated as the Moist Chairman Prachada, the coordinator of the taskforce remained out of the country on a visit to China. The Study Committee of the Constituent Assembly had last month identified over 200 contentious issues in the concept papers of eight thematic committees. Some of the key disputed issues related the system of governance, judicial system, federal structure, and electoral system. Out of eleven thematic committees of the constituent assembly, only three have submitted their concept papers to the constitutional committee, the key constitution drafting body.To speed up the process of drafting the new statute, a seven-member high level task force consisting representatives of major political parties was formed early this month to iron out difference among the parties on contentious issues of the concept papers. The term of the constituent assembly was extended for a year to enable the promulgation of the new constitution by May 28 next year.
