All Kerala parties agree to hold local polls in a single phase

In Kerala, the all party meeting convened by the state election commission has unanimously agreed to hold elections to the local self governing institutions in a single phase. Election commission sources indicated that the decision will be conveyed to the state government and a formal announcement of election date is likely soon. Local elections were scheduled to take place next month and as of now it is likley to be delayed by a month. Meanwhile, the congress led opposition has once again alleged that elections are delayed due to inaction on the part of the LDF government. Recently a court verdict has cancelled the delimitation process in many districts and block panchayats. As per rules, the next elected local body representatives should assume office by 2nd October this year.
