All irregularities in CWG will be examined and the guilty will not be spared: Sports Minister

The Government today said that all irregularities in the recently concluded Commonwealth Games (CWG) will be examined and the guilty will not be spared. Making suo motu statement in Parliament, Sports Minister M S Gill assured that the government will carefully take on board the recommendations of the Shunglu Committee, the CAG and the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) before agreeing to host similar international sporting events. Mr Gill informed the members that the CAG has already started auditing all games related projects and the expenditure of the Organising Committee (OC). He said the CAG plans to complete this exercise within three months and present a draft report by the first week of January next year. He said the Central Vigilance Commission is examining various complaints received regarding the games. Other agencies such as the CBI, Enforcement Directorate and Income Tax Authorities are investigating alleged irregularities. The Minister also said India, with its rich haul of medals, has emerged as a significant sporting nation in the world. He said Indian athletes have registered outstanding medal winning performance. He said the 19th Commonwealth Games were an occasion to celebrate sporting excellence. The statement was laid on the table of both the houses in the midst of uproarious scenes by opposition over its demand for JPC probe into all corruption cases including the CWG.
